: Hospitality that has been passed down through generations.
Some stories don't start with a hotel. They start with a farm, a family, and a desire to welcome people.
The Obermaier family has owned this historic property in the old town center of Trudering since 1863. Much has changed over the course of five generations: What was once a farm evolved into an inn, then a butcher shop, and finally the Hotel Obermaier as our guests know it today.
What remains is what has always defined our establishment: personal hospitality, our connection to our Bavarian homeland, and our commitment not only to preserving tradition but also to constantly reinterpreting it.
1859
A Famous Guest
Even before the Obermaier family’s history at our house began, we had the pleasure of welcoming a special guest: During the 1859 parish fair, the poet and illustrator Wilhelm Busch stayed with us.
The future creator of “Max and Moritz” is thus part of a story that, to this day, is marked by encounters and hospitality.
1863
The Beginnings of the Obermaier Family
Josef and Theresia Obermaier purchase the historic, protected property in the old town center of Trudering.
This marked the beginning of a family tradition that continues to this day. Generation after generation, the family has continued to develop the property—first as a farm, inn, and butcher shop, and later as a hotel.
1984
Tradition Gives Rise to Something New
Under Elisabeth Obermaier, the former Hotel Garni underwent extensive renovation and expansion. New rooms were added, the front desk was modernized, and a new breakfast room was created.
A special piece of Munich's history is making its way to Trudering: Original old brick floors from Munich's Bürgerbräukeller are being laid in the breakfast room.
A detail that still fits our home perfectly today: creating something new while preserving history.

Traditional Craftsmanship
For many decades, the Obermaier butcher shop has also been an integral part of the family business. Max Obermaier Sr. runs it with passion and has made it an institution in Trudering.
In 1998, the butcher shop was leased out due to the owner's age. However, our commitment to fine craftsmanship and our high standards of quality remain an integral part of our philosophy.
1998
The fifth generation takes over
With Markus Obermaier, the fifth generation is taking the reins of the family business.
Together with his wife, Maria, he continues to run the Hotel Obermaier to this day—committed to preserving the hotel’s unique character while looking toward the future.
2000
Historical Roots. New Comfort.
An extensive renovation and expansion project marks the beginning of a new chapter.
The hotel we know today—a traditional establishment featuring new Comfort Rooms—is taking shape. At the same time, the reception area is being given a very special location: in the historic vaulted ceiling of the former stables.
This does not separate the old from the new—rather, it deliberately connects them.
2019
The Obermaier Hotel Is Expanding
After nearly three years of planning and construction, the Obermaier family is welcoming a “new addition”: the new main house is opening its doors.
66 new rooms and suites are expanding the hotel and bringing a modern architectural touch to Trudering.
Here, too, the spirit of the house remains evident: modern amenities and contemporary design blend with Bavarian tradition and the history of the original house.
2023–2026
For us, tradition also means continuous improvement
That is why, over the past few years, numerous rooms have been modernized step by step. New flooring, high-quality beds, fresh colors, and carefully selected furnishings give them a contemporary feel.
In 2025, the Comfort Rooms will be renovated, and in 2026, 27 rooms in the historic hotel will receive fully modernized bathrooms.
Our goal is not to replace the old with the new. Rather, we want to preserve the unique character of our hotel while providing the comfort our guests expect today.
