A Journey Through Time
Some stories don't start with a hotel. They start with a farm, a family, and a desire to welcome people.
The Obermaier family has owned this historic property in the old town center of Trudering since 1863. Much has changed over the course of five generations: What was once a farm evolved into an inn, then a butcher shop, and finally the Hotel Obermaier as our guests know it today.
What remains is what has always defined our establishment: personal hospitality, our connection to our Bavarian homeland, and our commitment not only to preserving tradition but also to constantly reinterpreting it.
1859
Wilhelm Busch
Even before the Obermaier family's story began at our house, a special guest stopped by: Wilhelm Busch.
On September 4, 1859, the poet and illustrator visited the Trudering Church Fair and stayed overnight at what was then known as the “Großer Wirt, ” now the site of the Hotel Obermaier. The Trudering church fair apparently made a lasting impression on him: In his notes, Busch described the colorful hustle and bustle, customs, and traditional attire of the Trudering residents—and also captured the young women and men as well as the exuberant atmosphere at the church fair dance.
To this day, a wooden plaque in our historic inn commemorates this special visit.
1863
The Beginnings of the Obermaier Family
Josef and Theresia Obermaier of Johanneskirchen purchase the historic, listed property in the old town center of Trudering.
This marked the beginning of a family tradition that continues to this day. Generation after generation, the family has continued to develop the property—first as a farm, inn, and butcher shop, and later as a hotel.
1909
A House Full of Life
Max and Viktoria Obermaier run the Tafernwirtschaft, a large estate. At that time, the business employed eight farmhands, two Swiss workers, a waitress, a cook, two maids, and a barmaid. The butcher Joseph and “Kindsmarie,” who has loyally stood by the innkeeper for over 40 years, also play a significant role in life at the inn.
Even back then, the Obermaier was already a lively gathering place in the heart of Trudering.
1933
A New Generation Steps Up
Josef and Irene Obermaier began their life together in the family business. With hard work and personal dedication, they continued to run the restaurant and butcher shop and raised their three children, Max, Eugen, and Irene. Their son Max was born in 1933.
1953
The First Guest Rooms
In 1953, a new chapter began at the Obermaier with the opening of a guesthouse that initially had nine rooms. This marked the creation of the first guest rooms in what is now a historic establishment—and laid the foundation for the Hotel Obermaier as we know it today.
1972
A Defining Generation
For many decades, Max Obermaier Sr. has shaped the family business and a piece of Trudering’s history. He runs the Obermaier butcher shop with great passion and, through his craftsmanship, commitment to quality, and warm, personal manner, has made it a fixture in the community.
For him, the butcher shop is much more than just a job. It represents what matters most to him: honest craftsmanship, reliability, quality, and a sense of connection with the people of Trudering.
In 1998, Max Obermaier Sr. leased out the butcher shop, thereby passing an important part of the family business into new hands. His attitude and values, however, remain—and continue to shape the Obermaier family and our business to this day.
1984
Tradition Gives Rise to Something New
Under Elisabeth Obermaier, the former Hotel Garni underwent extensive renovation and expansion. New rooms were added, the front desk was modernized, and a new breakfast room was created.
A special piece of Munich’s history is making its way to Trudering: Original old brick floors from Munich’s Bürgerbräukeller are being installed in the breakfast room. It’s a detail that still fits perfectly with our establishment today: creating something new while preserving history.
1998
The fifth generation takes over
With Markus Obermaier , the fifth generation is taking over the family business.
Together with his wife, Maria, he continues to run the Hotel Obermaier to this day—committed to preserving the hotel’s unique character while also looking toward the future.
2000
Historical Roots. New Comfort.
An extensive renovation and expansion project marks the beginning of a new chapter.
The hotel we know today—a traditional establishment featuring new Comfort Rooms—is taking shape. At the same time, the reception area is being given a very special location: in the historic vaulted ceiling of the former stables.
This does not separate the old from the new—rather, it deliberately connects them.
2019
The Obermaier Hotel Is Expanding
After nearly three years of planning and construction, the Obermaier family is welcoming a “new addition”: the new main house is opening its doors.
66 new rooms and suites are expanding the hotel and bringing a modern architectural touch to Trudering.
Here, too, the spirit of the house remains evident: modern amenities and contemporary design blend with Bavarian tradition and the history of the original house.
2023–2026
For us, tradition also means continuous improvement
That is why, over the past few years, numerous rooms in this historic hotel have been gradually modernized. New flooring, high-quality beds, new bathrooms, fresh colors, and carefully selected furnishings give them a contemporary feel.
Our goal is not to replace the old with the new. Rather, we want to preserve the unique character of our hotel while providing the comfort our guests expect today.
